S15 E35 - Breaking The Spell (Part 1)

(Holly is about to park in a space when Patrick comes racing up behind her in his car)
HOLLY: Don't you dare Patrick.
(Patrick takes the space and Holly reverses so she's next to him)
PATRICK: Morning
HOLLY: Thanks a bunch Patrick

*-*-*-*-*

(Holly's car alarm goes off for no reason)
HOLLY: Shut up!
PATRICK: You still having problems? You ought to get it fixed.
HOLLY: I know
PATRICK: I'll have a look at it again if you want.
HOLLY: It was fine until you looked at it the last time.
PATRICK: Oh, that's right, blame me for everything!
HOLLY: I'm not blaming you Patrick, I'm just winding you up a little that's all.

*-*-*-*-*

(Holly and Ed are in the relatives room)
HOLLY: So how do you know him? Is he a friend?
ED: No, no. Well not exactly. I'm his counsellor
HOLLY: You do counselling now?
ED: There's a centre down in town, I work there.
HOLLY: Well that's great!
ED: Not on days like today
HOLLY: So that's why you were round Graham's house?
ED: Yeah, he's agoraphobic. That's the whole point that’s what I've been trying to help him with. But, er, he's been phoning me, you know. Telling me that there were kids hassling him. Coming round his house, threatening to . . . and I just told him to go to the police. Then I went there today and he's . . .
HOLLY: Ed, listen, it's not your fault, yeah?
ED: I know, I don't blame myself. I'm just angry, you know. Something like this happens and there's nothing I can do. Not like you guys - the real heroes.
HOLLY: Come here (She hugs him)
ED: Hey, it's okay. I was nearly a doctor myself once, remember? You know, I've seen A&E on a Saturday night when the pubs close and the fights come in. The glassings and the stabbings.
HOLLY: It doesn't get any easier.
(Jack appears at the door)
JACK: Patrick needs you in resus now.
HOLLY: Thanks.

*-*-*-*-*

PATRICK: Well this'll be fun.
(He opens the door of the relatives room, but someone else is in there)
PATRICK: Sorry. Well, I can't speak to him if he's not here, can I?
HOLLY: He must be here somewhere he wouldn't just have left.
PATRICK: How d'you know?
HOLLY: Cos he needs to talk to the police
PATRICK: Mmm yeah well that's just it isn't it.
HOLLY: What?
PATRICK: Well he comes in covered in blood with someone who's been stabbed and he says he's the one that called the ambulance. Well we don't know do we? We don't know what happened.
HOLLY: Oh, so it's not good enough that you got him chucked out of med school you're now accusing him of murder aswell?
PATRICK: I keep telling you - I didn't get him thrown off the course! I'm just saying, given his record—
HOLLY: Record? He's not a criminal Patrick!
PATRICK: No? He was taking drugs!
HOLLY: Stimulants! To help him get through the course!
PATRICK: Oh well that makes it better does it?
HOLLY: No, of course it doesn't. But he could have been a good doctor! If he'd been helped! Yes, if he'd been given a second chance!
PATRICK: He's a liability! Probably still is now
HOLLY: You've never given him credit for anything have you?
PATRICK: Except splitting us up, that's one thing he did manage.
HOLLY: No we split up because of you, not him! You're acting as though you're still jealous of him!
PATRICK: Me jealous? Jealous of him? (Holly nods) That's ridiculous!
HOLLY: There he is. Look, I'll go and speak to him then.
PATRICK: Oh no, no I said I'd do it
HOLLY: No not if you're just going to accuse him!
PATRICK: I can be professional about this, even if he isn't

*-*-*-*-*

PATRICK: Ed. We tried everything that we could. We couldn't save him. I'm sorry.
ED: I'd like to see him
PATRICK: Well actually the police do need someone to make a formal identification
ED: Well at least I can do that
PATRICK: As you know this is a suspicious death, so we haven't been able to lay him out. I think you should be prepared for him to look a bit-
ED: Patrick, I do know what he'll look like. I used to be one of you.
PATRICK: This way

*-*-*-*-*

(Patrick is telling Ed about why Graham died and using lots of medical terms)
ED: Why are you doing this?
PATRICK: What?
ED: The medical terms
PATRICK: Well I thought you might appreciate this. I mean, you're not just another punter. You know about this. (Holly's head appears round the door but they don't see her) Or have you forgotten everything that I taught you?
ED: I know what's wrong with him Patrick. I knew he was dying when I found him. He knew. I can deal with this. I just hate failing.
PATRICK: Yeah, same here
(Holly comes in)
HOLLY: You alright?
ED: Yeah don't worry, we're not gonna kill each other
PATRICK: Well if you're okay, I've got some stuff to do.

*-*-*-*-*

HOLLY: Well I'd better get back to work
ED: Holly wait a minute, please. Erm, what time do you finish?
HOLLY: I'm sorry?
ED: What time do you finish work? Cos let's go for a drink. Look, I know it's not a good time, there's never a good time, but I really wanna see you.
HOLLY: I don't think it's a good idea
ED: We could just talk
HOLLY: You never wanted to 'just talk'
ED: Alright, yeah, you're right, I do want more than that. But why not? I mean, you're not seeing Patrick anymore, and you wanted more than to just talk when you held me earlier.
HOLLY: Oh no, you're reading far too much into that. I just felt sorry for you that's all!
ED: Do you still think about me Holly?
HOLLY: No! I mean yes, I mean sometimes! But—
ED: Well then why can't we try again? Look, I know I was screwed up before and it can't have been very nice for you to find out I'd overdosed, but I'm different now Holly - I'm clean!
HOLLY: Look you've gotta stop this now Ed. This has got nothing to do with you taking drugs! There's somebody else.
ED: Oh I see. Anyone I know?
(Holly stares at Ed in a meaningful way)
ED: Oh no, don't tell me you've gone back to him!
HOLLY: Look please don't talk about Patrick like that because you don't know him!
ED: I was never quite good enough for you was I? Just a bit of a distraction until Patrick came along.
HOLLY: That's not fair Ed
ED: Oh yes it is! You dumped me when you realised I wasn't going to be a top consultant. Because you couldn't bear anyone around you to be ordinary. You know I wouldn't be surprised if you'd shot me to Patrick just to get him to do your dirty work for you.
HOLLY: I'd like you to go now!
ED: Yeah, you'd like that wouldn't you. Well in a way you're worse than Patrick cause at least Patrick plays it straight!
(Ed walks away and knocks roughly into Patrick as he passes him)
PATRICK: What's got into him?

*-*-*-*-*

PATRICK: So?
HOLLY: So what?
PATRICK: So what got him so rattled?
HOLLY: He made a pass at me if you must know. I told him to go away, he didn’t take it very well.
PATRICK: Typical, never could take a hint. I told you he couldn’t change.
HOLLY: What I don’t need right now Patrick is your jealousy, that’s what came between us the last time.
PATRICK: I’m not jealous of Ed (Holly passes him a cup of coffee.) 2 sugars.
HOLLY: Well maybe not now but you certainly were then ok and I never understood why you had it in for him.
PATRICK: Envious
HOLLY: What?
PATRICK: Envious, not jealous. You were always laughing together, you found it easy to talk. Half of the time I didn’t know what to say to you.
HOLLY: But I left him for you!
PATRICK: I know. Didn’t stop me worrying you’d go back to him though did it?
HOLLY: Oh I see, so when he overdosed and you saved him, you thought that would be the perfect excuse to get him thrown off the course.
PATRICK: No I didn’t. I wanted to yes he deserved it. But someone got there before me. I know you’ve never believe me about that. Ed told you that he found out the name of the person who shopped him from the dean didn’t he?
HOLLY: Yes and he said it was you. And I had no reason to think he would lie.
PATRICK: But I did. The only reason that Ed lied to you was that he knew you’d never forgive me. And he’s right. I’m telling you the truth Holly and if you can't accept that then we’ve nothing more to say to each other.
(He begins to walk away then stops and turns back.)
PATRICK: You keep trying to change me. You keep wanting me to be somebody that I’m not. I’ll never be good enough for you.

*-*-*-*-*

HOLLY: Patrick, erm, you were wrong, you know.
PATRICK: Oh there's a surprise, me being wrong.
HOLLY: About not being good enough for me. You are.
PATICK: You sure? Or are you going to change your mind if Ed turns up again?
HOLLY: No, I didn't realise how vicious he could be.
PATRICK: Yeah, well you should have listened to me shouldn't y—
HOLLY: Yeah, don't push it! So listen, earlier when you said you were jealous of - sorry - envious of Ed.
PATRICK: Yes.
HOLLY: Well that sounded like an apology to me.
PATRICK: Nah, it can't have been.
HOLLY: So listen, erm, do you fancy going for a drink later, after the shift?
PATRICK: Alright. As long as you're buying.
